In this article, David Cameron shows his reluctance to label himself as 'feminist'. Why might this be?
What do you think of his use of the phrase "Classic male childcare."?
Feminism is a very sensitive topic. If you say you are a Feminism, people expect you to be an extremest and if you say you are not, especially if you are a male, you're sexist. For political reasons and how society is structured (let's face it, although it is improving, women are still worse off), David Cameron did not want to be direct and answer 'yes I am' or 'no, I am not' because his pride goes against his morals in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think the prime minister has to be careful about what he says in order to prevent people having a reason to dislike him because he is not popular with some people due to what he's bought in. I think looking at others very similar to him they were brought up to have this attitude but as I said he doesn't want another reason for people to dislike him.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if feminism is exactly seen as negative, but the connotations surrounding it are ambiguous in general, with peoples opinion varying on what a 'feminist' actually is, so that may be why David Cameron was reluctant to label himself when its such a ambiguous topic.
ReplyDeleteI have a mixed view on this, because as Vicky said, as the prime minister he had to be very careful about what he says as this will affect his popularity, and it could also be linked to what Daisy said: that his true answer may go against what he should and can say. Also, I agree with Alex that 'feminism' is not fully clarified but a lot of people - many people have different connotations of the word so the topic will be different to everyone, whether they be knowledgeable about it or not.
ReplyDeleteI think the use of the phrase 'classic male childcare' is quite dangerously used actually, because yes it is stereotyping men into not being able to look after children, but hasn't he been saying that men and women should be equal? So if women are fighting for equality, so having some help with domestic labour, surely by saying that it's just saying men can't look after children and going against the idea of equality?
