Do we still need the family?

To what extent have the functions of the family been taken over by other social institutions such as the education system, social services and the NHS?  Do we really need families any more?

  1. Social institutions don't compare to family, simply because they treat you like statistic.
Family treats you like individual. Your mother cares about your education more than school and teachers. She also cares more when you're hurt than doctor which has seen thousand of similar health related problems to yours. Family is run by emotions which homosapiens have being gifted.
Were not robots and no social institution will overtake the need to be looked b the parents.

  2. The family is very important for nurturing at least the first 5 years of a child's life. Without the family, society would crumble. Many children would be feral as they will not have been taught how to socialise and their behaviour would be indescribable. However, the importance of the family has declined I would say since secondary socialisation is more overpowering at an older age. For example, teens are more likely to listen to the opinion of their friends than their family as they are constantly trying to 'fit in' with peer groups. Nevertheless, the family is the main institution to socialise children so the family will always be needed.

  3. i believe a family is important for nurturing children and socialising, and as daisy said it is the first 5 years of a childs life that are the most important as they teach a child norms and values for the society in which they live. However, if a child is to become independent and, in murdocks view meet their families economic needs, it may be neccessary for the schooling system to step in if the parents are unable to do so, although, the family is still vital as they do provide norms and values for a child aswell as primary sociolisation.

  4. We all need family for basic support. Family is the first port of call for any problem and for most essential or any problem they have. The more complex problems we deal with through other people but we do this because we feel that they have better experience and they can look after people more.
